Programme Aims

The aims are to assist Gateshead College in realising their vision of becoming the best Sports Academy in the country and to encourage young people to further their education through their love of sport.

Fundamental to the success of the programme have been the core values chosen by the students and staff themselves. The values forming the 5 Rings of Success are:

About This Programme

Gateshead College joined forces with Kelly Holmes Education to deliver a Sport Education programme for over 300 Sports Academy students, officially announced in July 2012.

The bespoke Mentoring and Education Programme covered three levels in year one; Performance, Development and Participation, working closely with Gateshead College staff and the students' personal coaches. The content incorporates modules from the five core areas: Physical, Physiological, Psychological, Emotional and Social, ranging from pre-performance routines and lifestyle management to recovery nutrition, hydrotherapy and using social media.

The workshops aim to inspire all levels from recreational participants to performance athletes, to bring out the very best in everyone including coaches and teachers.

Gateshead College was crowned '2012 College of the Year' by the prestigious British Colleges Sport.

Delivery Year 1:
  • Media Launch Day
  • 15 Workshop Days across the 3 student groups
  • Celebration Event

Over 300 students at the College were divided into three levels and the workshops were tailored to suit the specific group.

Sports Person - Performance

A student, aged 16-19, who is training regularly and competing at regional level or above.

Sports Person - Development

A student, aged 16-19, who is training regularly and competing at club or county level.

Sports Person - Participation

A student, aged 16-19, who enjoys taking part in sport recreationally and may compete for the school but is not training at an elite level.


Coaches and teachers employed by Gateshead College as well as the students' personal coaches.

Throughout your sporting career, always give respect to others, without respect you undermine who you are as a person. Learn now to respect everyone – or learn the hard way and live with regrets.


The right attitude will get you far, the wrong attitude just because you think you “deserve respect already” will stop people believing in you and question your commitment. Very few people with the wrong attitude fulfil their true potential.


No one has ever reached their full potential without ambition “believe in yourself and set your goals”.
